Bio Diesel, a rare and scarce product in Botswana and the world over has found a place in the country with the so much green talk, which has characterized the agendas of many conventions lately, both nationally and globally.
In fact, in many instances it has been top on the priority list and the agendas and even the only issue of discussion at the December Copenhagen summit, which attracted tens of thousands of delegates from the breadth and width of the world late last year.
The Business Diary visited Biodiesel Botswana (Pty) Ltd, a local plant in Ramotswa, a rural setting 25km away from Gaborone. This is a new and exciting BioDiesel processing unit, not only from Africa but right here in our backyard, where Kynn Bullock a 32 year old entrepreneur based in a rural setting; some 25km away from Gaborone is walking the green talk in Botswana.
After going around the world for six years, Bullock came back to Botswana and transformed her father’s hobby into a viable business venture and a significant green environment initiative. The result was Biodiesel Botswana; the country’s sole licensed such entity.
She has set up an amazing small scale plant that produces up to 20,000litres of pure high quality biodiesel fuel a month which is clean burning alternative fuel. Her raw material: used cooking oil collected from fast food outlets such as Nando’s, KFC and Chicken Licken around the country.
According to Bullock, Bio Diesel is better than the fossil (Standard) diesel as it is cleaner, environmentally friendly and encourages no wastage to our limited resources.
“In this process we do not throw way anything as all by-products are used in one way or the other in completely a total consumption process, this as well creates employment for various people,” she told The Business Diary.
However, Bullock says that the market acceptance of her product is somehow fear based as people do not know much about the benefits of the Bio diesel, among them includes, cleaner fuel for the engine, highly bio-degradable and is currently cost effective than the traditional fossil diesel.
Her passion for a clean environment is powered by a very fascinating philosophy and beyond that a significant contribution to solving the global challenge.
Still, Bullock says that diesel and thermal electricity are examples of fossil fuels that human beings have used to extensively damage the quality of life today and eliminate the possibility of life for the future generations but unfortunately mankind cannot do without them.
Commenting on the global environmental problems, she noted that “The problem is simple, there is not enough oxygen and too much carbon dioxide” complained Bullock a self proclaimed environmentalist at heart.
Asked on the consistence quality and colour of her product she said that the color is a reflection of nature as it is diverse and that depends on the newness of the raw material used and she strongly condemned product blending.
“I also disagree with the idea of importing everything we need to use here. I hold the motto that ‘local is lakker’”, she beamed, contending that a lot of fossil fuels have to be burnt, contaminating the environment, in order to get the many products we consume on a daily basis from across the globe.
Commenting on her contribution to Botswana with regards to national heritage, Bullock said that she believes she is playing her role in preserving the national heritage.
“As much as I would not like to give up driving to walk in order to minimize greenhouse gas emissions, I would also want to leave a legacy for posterity, at the same time helping in socioeconomic development of Botswana.”
